Classic | Pocket | Light | Color | Advance | SP | Micro

The original Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld video game platform developed by Nintendo. After a couple iterations the Game Boy Color was released. Color also had an 8-bit processor but offered a color screen and was smaller than the original Game Boy. Color was the first handheld that offered backwards compatibility with the original Game Boy models allowing it to offer a signiciantly larger game library than its competitors.

The Game Boy Advance (GBA) followed the Game Boy Color in 2001. The GBA offers a much improved 32-bit CPU. It is also backwards compatible to both Game Boy Color and the classic Game Boy but offers a new type of game cartridge that boasts graphics and sound capabilities closer to the Super Nintendo. The Game Boy Advance SP was released in 2003 with a brighter LCD screen, rechargeable lithium ion battery, an internal front light, and a physical size almost half of the orginal Advance. In 2005 the Game Boy Micro was released as an ultra small portable gaming device. Because of its size the Micro did not offer backwards compatibility.
