Jay Street Video Games : Retro : PlayStation 1 & 2

PlayStation is a 32-bit disc based console released in 1995. Early development was originally to bring a disc-based add on to the Super Nintendo but contractual issues led Sony to develop a stand alone console that they would retain full rights over. When the deal with Nintendo fell through Sony decided to try to bring the console forward in technology and dropped all support for cartridge based games. Along with playing games the PlayStation could be used as an audio CD player. The PlayStation requires memory cards to save game data. In 2000 a physically smaller PS One was released with the same functions as the original PlayStation.

In 2000 the PlayStation 2 was released and would go on to be the top selling video game console of all time. The PS2 is fully backwards compatible with the PS1, came with a built in DVD player that requires no extra hardware to use, and later added a development kit for game developers. Upon the release of Microsoft's Xbox Sony released a network adapter for the PS2 to promote online gaming. Similar to the PS1 the PS2 was given a physically smaller redesign.
