Master System | Genesis | Sega CD | 32x | Saturn | Game Gear

The Sega Master System was released in America in 1986. Master System plays both cartridges and credit-card sized Sega Cards. The Sega Cards were cheaper than cartridges but contained less content. The Master System was released as a competitor to the NES but despite being technologically superior it could not topple the NESs popularity.

In 1989 the Sega Genesis was released beating the SNES to the market with a 16-bit console. In 1990 a change in leadership at Sega saw the Genesis console receive a price drop, an aggressive marketing campaign was set up in North America, and the Genesis was bundled with a new title, Sonic the Hedgehog.

In 1992 Sega CD was released. Sega CD is a CD-ROM drive that adds to the Sega Genesis. This allowed the console to play Disc based games increasing the Genesis' functionality. The most successful Sega CD games were existing titles that were given a face lift, additional levels, and cinematic cutscenes to tell the story. The Genesis was later given a second add on, the 32x, in 1994. The 32x played enhanced cartridges but with the release of the Sega Saturn in 1995 and the lackluster preformance of the Sega CD it had a short lifespan on the market.

Sega Saturn is a 32-bit gaming console that was given a surprise release date four months before the Sony Playstation. The surprise release gave Sega an open market for a short time but meant that the console was released with a very limited selection of titles. The Saturn was the most popular choice for import gamers as well as gamers interested in arcade ports.

The Sega Game Gear was the third commercially available full color handheld console. It was released in 1991 as a handheld Master System with a higher color palette and stereo output. The Game Gear's landscape layout made the console more comfortable to hold and the back lit screen allowed play in different lighting conditions.
