Marketed to a broader audience than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 the Wii quickly became the top selling 7th generation video game console. The console is designed for gamers and non-gamers alike. It is also designed as a group gaming console right down to the name the two lower case "i"s are supposed to represent two people standing together.
The Wii is controlled entirely by infrared detection picked up by a sensor bar in three-dimensions. The controller (Wii-Mote) is not shaped like a traditional video game controller but more like a pointer. The Wii is also equipped with a built in wireless modem that allows WiiConnect24 to receive messages and update the console while it is in standby mode.
Wii is fully backwards compatible with the Gamecube; even offering four controller ports and two memory card slots for Gamecube accessories. Wii also has the Wii Shop Channel which allows people to purchase NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis games as a digital download.
Despite the full backwards compatibility and wireless internet built in the Wii does not have the same technological advances as the other 7th Generation consoles. It can not play DVDs and the max video output is only 480p.
